This is how to sort your household waste

In our municipality we concentrate on increased waste sorting at source. By sorting we can decrease the amount of waste and increase re-use and recycling so that we save both natural resources and energy.

This means that as well as separating hazardous waste, packaging materials, paper, landfill waste and bulky waste, the remaining household waste is divided into compostable waste and combustible waste.

Household food waste

Food scraps, eggshells and small bones are to be placed in a paper bag and then put in the grey container. Add kitchen paper or place a sheet of newspaper in the bottom if it gets too wet.

Combustible household waste

Collect it in an optional bag and placed in the green container. E.g. envelopes, all plastic that is not packaging, vacuum cleaner bags, nappies and CDs.

Clear glass packaging

Only jars and bottles! Note: Returnable bottles are to be taken back to the shop. Light bulbs are electrical waste.

Coloured glass packaging

Only jars and bottles! Note: Drinking glasses, mirror glass, windows, porcelain and ceramics are landfill.

Metal packaging

Rinse out the packaging. If it is a tube, empty as much out as possible, and then leave the cap in place.

Plastic packaging

Recycle both rigid and non-rigid plastic. Place them loosely in the same container for subsequent mechanical separation.

Paper packaging

Recycle both cartons and bags. Rinse out, flatten and fold up the packaging!

Newspapers and printed material

Include books with soft covers and note pads with spiral backs. Note: No envelopes and post-it notes.

Scrap-metal

All metal that is not packaging. E.g. saucepans, tools, bicycles, guttering, drainpipes, lawnmowers.

Electrical waste

Anything powered by a cord or battery. E.g. low-energy bulbs, fluorescent tubes, watches, telephones, chargers, toys, hairdryers.

Batteries

All types of batteries can be taken to the recycling centre. Small batteries can also be left in battery collection boxes at the recycling stations.

Wood waste

Separate out impregnated and untreated wood. E.g. timber, wooden furniture, pallets, sleepers etc.

Landfill

Everything that cannot be incinerated or recycled. E.g. porcelain, ceramics, drinking glasses, mirrors, fuses, plugs, clay pots, cat sand.

Combustible Bulky Waste

Only bulky waste, not ordinary household waste. E.g. furniture, large toys, mattresses, skis etc.

Plaster

Including plaster with wallpaper or paint residues.

Garden waste

Separate "compostable" e.g. leaves, grass and twigs from "chippable" e.g. branches and larger twigs. Empty garden waste out of bin bags please!

Hazardous waste

Paint residues, solvents, varnish, adhesive, oil residues, asbestos, chemicals, spray cans, materials containing mercury. Seal the container tightly and mark it with the contents or write "unknown" if you don't know. Do not mix different types of waste.

Corrugated cardboard

Distinguished by its corrugated layer. Small amounts can be left at the recycling station.
